Locking lugnuts - no key

Postby FazFX on Sun Jan 22, 2006 2:09 pm

I just realized that the 240sx I bought has lugnuts that require a key and I don't have one. The carshop I bought it from picked it up at an auction, so they don't have it either.

Is there some "secret" way I can get them off so I can replace them with normal lugnuts? They look similar to normal ones, but they're smooth most of the way down until just before they meet the rim. Any ideas?

i had a similar problem where my key got busted. I had to have a tire place break the lugnuts, or something like that, and replace them with regular ones. I dont know how else to get them off.

I think some places have a "universal" type key. You'd have to go to a reputable dealership though, I don't think a Autozone or Discount Tire type place will have them. My friend had this problem on his Toyota and a dealership was able to get them off for him.

I had a similar problem with my gas cap once. How do you think it feels to be riding E and finally make it to a gas station only to find out you can't get the cap off! LOL!

You can pound a slightly larger socket over the lock lug. Count on never using that socket again.

You can weld a regular lug nut on to the end of the lock lug.

You can, as mentioned, buy lock lug removers, or seek out a shop that uses them.
Tell me what size you need I may beable to send you one of mine, if you can wait.

No, no, no. Sears sell those Gator Grips that can contore to any lug nuts. I use back in the days(high school) to steal rims. This was before I got saved.

Thanks for all the help, guys! I got the problem resolved, but I didn't end up having to use any of your suggestions, though. The solution was really much simpler...

While I was showing my car to my friend, he pointed out a shiny sticker on the side of the door with a "Gorilla" logo on it, a lug-nut registration code, and instructions on ordering a replacement key. I couldn't tell if the lug nuts matched the label, but I figured "what the heck...it's worth a shot." Sure enough, after $8.50 and a week later, I got a key and it matched perfectly.
